Trail Recommendations from the Mohonk Team
Garden Overlook (Easy)
Recommended by: Nina Smiley, Ph.D., Director of Mindfulness Programming
From the Mountain House, take Huguenot Drive past the Show Garden. Return the same way or take the wooden steps down to Bruin Path back through the Show Garden.
“This walk takes you alongside the Mohonk gardens up an easy elevation as cliffs, ferns, and evergreens nurture your experience. Reaching the top of the hill, you’re rewarded with a spacious vista of the Mountain House and gardens, with the Catskill Mountains in the distance. It’s an opportunity to linger for a mindful moment and take a full, gentle breath – feel the breeze on your skin, smell the sweet mountain air, and hear the sounds that surround you – as you enjoy a unique perspective.”
Rock Rift Path (Moderate)
Recommended by: Eric Gullickson, President of Mohonk Mountain House
Past the Barn Museum, take Mossy Brook Road. Take a right onto Cedar Drive, then a right onto Rock Rift Road, then a right onto North Lookout. Return via North Lookout to the Barn Museum.
“Although short, this trail is one of my favorites because it cuts up and switchbacks along the northern side of the ridge, and you gain some serious elevation in a short amount of time. The reward is that it tops out on North Lookout Road, where you have one of the most scenic vistas toward the Catskills on the property!”

Eagle Cliff (Easy)
Recommended by: Michael Ridolfo, Mohonk Mountain House Naturalist
Walk past the spa, to the Granary, and reach Eagle Cliff Road. Eagle Cliff Road is a loop or lollipop trail, where you will return to Eagle Cliff Road.
“If I had to choose one, today it would be the Eagle Cliff road. With its astounding geology, varied forest habitat, unique perspective of the Mohonk property, and spectacular views of several mountain ranges, it qualifies as a ‘must-see’ outing when visiting the area. I hope you get outside today and see something… inspiring.”
Stokes Trail to Laurel Ledge Road Loop (Moderate to Strenuous)
Recommended by: Alex Sherwood, Director of Hotel Operations and Mohonk’s “Endurance Concierge”
Past the Barn Museum, take Mossy Brook Road to the top of Stokes Trail. Take Stokes Trail, then make a left onto Undivided Lot Trail, then a left onto Old Minnewaska Trail, and then a left onto Laurel Ledge Road. Follow Laurel Ledge Road, then take a left onto Copes Lookout Road to return to the Mountain House.
“I’m a huge believer in the concept of work = reward, and this hike is a perfect example. It’s a more challenging route, but the effort is worth the solitude and the stunning beauty of this classic Shawangunk excursion. The 6-mile loop follows Stokes Trail (the oldest trail on the property!) to Undivided Lot Trail to Old Minnewaska Trail to Laurel Ledge Road, winding through historic landscapes, intimate trail corridors, and breathtaking cliffside views that beg you to pause and take it all in. Bring snacks and water—you’ll want to stay fueled for this Mohonk gem!”

After the Hike: Relax and Recharge
Once you’ve explored the trails, return to the Mohonk for a rewarding meal, a relaxing spa treatment, or simply to sit on the porch and admire the views. Hiking at Mohonk is about more than exercise—it’s a full-sensory experience that stays with you long after your boots come off.
