What is a Via Ferrata?
The Via Ferrata is a system of fixed cables, rungs, and ladders secured to rock, providing an opportunity for guests to experience a guided climbing experience.
Where is the Via Ferrata located?
The Via Ferrata is on the Mohonk Mountain House property, on the east-facing side of Eagle Cliff.
Are reservations required for the Via Ferrata?

Who can experience the Via Ferrata?
Overnight guests of Mohonk Mountain House and day guests with a Via Ferrata Day Pass can participate. All participants must be 13 years of age or older and must be between 88 and 264 pounds. This restriction is based on safety harness specifications. You should be a healthy and active person, able to walk, hike, and step, with good hand strength.
Who will guide the Via Ferrata?
Guides from Alpine Endeavors will lead all Mohonk Guests on the Eagle Cliff Via Ferrata.
Is there a fee for the Via Ferrata?
To experience Mohonk’s Via Ferrata, the day guest fee is $375 & overnight guests must pay a fee of $295 per person.
How long is the Via Ferrata?
From start to finish, the Via Ferrata excursion will last approximately 3 hours. This will include a brief walk to and from the cliff. The Via Ferrata features more than half a mile of continuous cable.
Is there an age requirement to participate?
Participants must be 13 years of age or older.
What should I wear & bring for the Via Ferrata?
- Sturdy closed-toe and closed-heel shoes or approach shoes are required. We do not allow sandals, Crocs, flip-flops, five-finger style shoes, or barefoot-toe shoes.

How strenuous is the Via Ferrata?
For a seasoned Mohonk guest, the Via Ferrata excursion will be a bit more strenuous than rock scrambling but not as challenging as rock climbing. It will require individuals to have good flexibility, hand and arm strength, and to be prepared for a full-body workout. It does require a person to be physically fit and in overall good health.
When is the Via Ferrata open?
Weather permitting, the Via Ferrata is available year-round.
Do I have to have a guide for Via Ferrata?
Yes, this experience must be reserved through the Mohonk Recreation Department by calling (845) 256-2186 or emailing [email protected].
What should I know before participating in the Via Ferrata?
Please read our response to the “what to wear and bring” question above. Also, ensure that all members of the group are physically fit to participate in a 3-hour hiking/climbing experience. Complete all assumption of risk forms. Inform guides of any pre-existing medical conditions that are pertinent to your experience with them.
Can I use my own equipment on the Mohonk Via Ferrata?
You will be provided a harness, helmet, and lanyard for your via ferrata experience. All participants must use this gear. No outside equipment will be permitted.
Can I exit the Via Ferrata once I have started it?
As the trail has restricted access for only guided climbing, there are limited exits and turnarounds along the way. These will be limited to emergency situations when they can be performed by a guide or with Mohonk staff assistance.
Late Arrival Policy for Via Ferrata?
Please arrive 15 minutes early for your scheduled departure time. Once the safety briefing is underway, any late arrivals will need to reschedule for an alternate time.
How large a group can participate in the Via Ferrata?
The typical guide-to-guest ratio is 1:4. In certain cases, larger groups can be accommodated by calling the Mohonk Recreation Office at (845)256-2186.

Participants must be 13 years of age or older.
