What is a Via Ferrata?
Via Ferrata is an unforgettable recreational activity that involves ascending steep, often exposed mountain routes by way of a system of fixed cables, rungs, and/or ladders attached to the quartz conglomerate rock – the term via ferrata means “iron way.” With a via ferrata climbing route, climbers/hikers use a harness and two lanyards with carabiners attached to the ends to clip themselves to cables. They then progress safely between the iron/steel poles that the cables run between. Experientially, via ferrata offers participants a way to enjoy the fun, thrills, and exposure of technical mountaineering or rock climbing with an easier learning curve. The Mohonk Via Ferrata adds additional excitement with magnificent features such as aerial bridges and sky ladders, with breathtaking views of the surrounding Shawangunk cliffs and mountains. This experience brings guests right up to the rock face and creates the sensation of almost feeling suspended in air, for a special connection with earth and sky.
❝The Shawangunk Mountains are a truly special spot on the planet. Much of Mohonk’s core values and nurturing abilities come from the landscape surrounding us. The Eagle Cliff Via Ferrata and Pinnacle Ledge Tour will be two experiences that will continue the tradition of affording our guests a once-in-a-lifetime perspective of this amazing location. The Via Ferrata has been designed in such a manner that you will excite all 5 senses while you traverse Eagle Cliff.❞ – Alex Sherwood, Mohonk Mountain House’s Director of Operations and “Endurance Concierge”
