Via Ferrata & Pinnacle Ledge FAQs

The Via Ferrata is a system of fixed cables, rungs, and ladders secured to rock, providing an opportunity for guests to experience a guided climbing experience.

Overnight guests of Mohonk Mountain House. All participants must be 13 years of age or older and must be between 88 and 264 pounds. This restriction is based on safety harness specifications. You should be a healthy and active person, able to walk, hike, and step, with good hand strength.

Guides from Alpine Endeavors will lead all Mohonk Guests on the Eagle Cliff Via Ferrata.

Yes,  $295 per person 

From start to finish the Via Ferrata excursion will last most of the group approximately 3 hours.  This will include a brief walk to and from the cliff. The Via Ferrata is over 1/2 mile of continuous cable.

Participants must be 13 years of age or older.

• Sturdy closed-toe and closed-heel shoes or approach shoes are required. We do not allow sandals, crocs, flip-flops, five-finger style shoes, or barefoot-toe shoes.

• Fingerless gloves are recommended

For a seasoned Mohonk guest, it will be a little bit more strenuous than rock scrambling but not as challenging as Rock climbing. It will require individuals to have good flexibility, hand and arm strength, and prepared for a full body workout. It does require a person to be physically fit and in overall good health.

Please read the what to bring/ wear.  Ensure that all members of the group are physically fit to participate in a 3 hour hiking/ climbing experience.  Complete all assumption of risk forms.  Inform guides of any pre-existing medical conditions that are pertinent to your experience with them.

 No. You will be provided a harness, helmet, and lanyard for your via ferrata experience.  All participants must use this gear. No outside equipment will be permitted. 

As the trail has restricted access for only guided climbing, there are limited exits and turnarounds along the way. These will be limited to emergency situations when they can be performed by a guide or Mohonk staff assistance.

Please arrive 15 minutes early to your scheduled departure time. Once the safety briefing is underway any late arrivals will need to reschedule for an alternate time.

The typical guide-to-guest ratio will be 1-4. In certain cases, larger groups can be accommodated by calling the Mohonk Recreation Office at 845 256-2186.

This Mohonk guided walking and rock scramble tour will explore several historic footpaths along the Sky Top ridge, east of Lake Mohonk. This tour will incorporate waist harnesses and lanyard systems for participants to utilize while on the Pinnacle Ledge trail.  This trail has mixed topography with exposure to quartz conglomerate rock ledges and cliff faces. Participants will go through a brief training on how to use the safety lanyards. Guides will ensure that everyone fully understands and is able to utilize them before proceeding. While traversing Pinnacle Ledge Trail participants will be attached to a safety cable along any exposed trail sections.  This path features several awe-inspiring moments, including an ariel bridge walkway and a sky ladder.

This tour is not recommended for guests with a strong fear of heights.

Trained guides from Mohonk’s Recreation staff will lead this tour.

From start to finish approximately 1.5 – 2 hours. The walking tour will cover 1.5 – 2 miles.

Participants must be 13 years of age or older.

• Approach shoe or sturdy closed-toe/heel shoes (no sandals, crocs, flip-flops, or five-finger style shoes)
• Water
• Snacks
• Sunscreen
• Sunglasses
• Any personal medications that are required
• Raingear
• Bug spray

This will be very similar to the level of activity as most regularly guided house hikes. Guests should be comfortable walking on mixed surfaces and going up and down at times steep inclines.

 No, you will be provided, a harness, lanyard and helmet for your Pinnacle Ledge experience.  All participants must use this gear.

As this trail has restricted access for only guiding hiking there are limited turnarounds or exits. This will be limited to emergency situations when they can be safely performed with guide assistance.

Please arrive 15 minutes early to your scheduled departure time. Once the safety briefing is underway any late arrivals will need to reschedule for an alternate time.
