Come join us for a stylish weekend of dancing, classes, live music, and fun! This new event features five sessions of free dancing with DJ selections and live bands. Swing dance is a group of dances that developed with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920s–1950s. During the swing era, there were hundreds of styles of swing dancing. We are pleased to offer classes taught by wonderful and experienced instructors in the Balboa, Shim Sham, Charleston, and more! Feel free to bring your finest threads and dance, dance, dance!

Basics for Beginners
Is it your first time out on the dance floor, or do you simply need a refresher? Come early for a “quick start” and learn the steps that will carry you through the weekend, or simply stop by to meet the instructors. No experience needed!
Welcome Dance with Fleur Seule
Allyson Briggs brings her dynamic Swing Orchestra back to Mohonk for an excellent live set. Fleur Seule is Manhattan’s iconic 1940s jazz band that brings the glamour and swinging sounds to life on stage.
Dance Class: Swing – Beginner
Candace Woodward Clough will teach beginners how to dance the first truly American dance, single 6-count Swing. A fun fast dance to enjoy with Big Band or Rock and Roll music. No previous experience required.
Dance Class: Swing – Intermediate
Join Laurie Shayler as she teaches an intermediate Swing/Lindy Hop variation class of the first truly American dance style.
Dance Class: Balboa!
Balboa is a swing era dance and is a great complement to swing/Lindy Hop. The close embrace makes it perfect for a crowded dance floor and fast tempos. Slavi Baylov and Lisa Uribe will teach the essentials to get you on the dance floor.
Big Band Swing!
Join DJ Gene for a free dance. Enjoy great songs from the Big-Band era that will keep you moving on the dance floor.
Dance Class: Charleston
Put some spice in your Swing! Learn fun and interesting variations of both Front-to-Back Charleston and Side-by-Side Charleston with Slavi and Lisa.
Dance Class: The Shim Sham
Laurie will have you swinging to this fun, syncopated Swing/Soft shoe line dance, no partner required! Then on Sunday, show it off at the Farewell Dance.
Swing Through the Ages!
The classes are over, so now it’s time to dance! Come join DJ Gene for another dance session that includes the best selections from all of the dance styles that have been taught and more.
The Bernstein Bard Quartet
The Bernstein Bard Quartet has become an acoustic music phenomenon in the Hudson Valley of New York over the last 12 years. They are known for their imaginative arrangements, eclectic repertoire, and infectious grooves. Come join the band for a fun night of dancing!
Dan Levinson’s Palomar Jazz Band with Molly Ryan and James Langton
This dynamic Jazz Band brings together the cream of New York City’s flourishing hot jazz scene, resulting in a magical chemistry, that blends the raucous, freewheeling sounds of the Jazz Age with the alluring, hypnotic beat of the Swing Era. Molly Ryan and James Langton lend their distinctive voices to the show and bring a great Swing Dance to the Parlor on our final night.
We’ll welcome back DJ Gene Eagle one more time for our final dance party and a chance to get some last-minute instruction from you teachers before a bountiful afternoon brunch! As a special treat, this dance will include a group Shim-Sham, so if you want to join in the fun be sure to take the class!
MEET THE ARTISTS
Fleur Seule is an authentic 1940s Jazz & Swing band that plays hits from all around the world. Songbird/Bandleader Allyson Briggs sings in 6 languages to accommodate a wide variety of New York audiences. Whether an All-American USO style set, or an exotic voyage through Europe, Fleur Seule will take you on a memorable musical journey, as they revive hits made famous by Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, Dinah Shore, and more.
Originally from Los Angeles, Dan has been based in New York City since 1983. He has performed in Brazil, Japan, Iceland, Latvia, and 18 European countries. Since 1993 he has been a member of Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, the country’s preeminent 1920s-‘30s hot jazz orchestra, with whom he has appeared at Carnegie Hall, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program. In 2017, he was named the winner of Hot House Magazine’s “NYC Jazz Fans Decision” award for Best Clarinetist. Dan has recorded over 150 CDs and can be heard on the soundtracks such as Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” and the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Visit Dan’s website at www.danlevinson.com.
Gene Eagle teaches social ballroom dance and DJ’s in Manhattan. He has been dancing ballroom and swing for over 25 years, and has performed at venues including the Waldorf Astoria and the 92nd Street Y, where he was also the host and DJ for the 92nd Street Y Ballroom Dance parties. He has DJ’d Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center, as well as at dance studios and private functions throughout NYC. He continues to host social dance parties in NYC under the auspices of GE Dance, and his eclectic music library includes both traditional ballroom dance music and contemporary pieces ideal for all styles of ballroom dancing.
MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
Candace Woodward-Clough is the founder of ballroom dance instruction at the New York Health and Racquet Club, has been a freelance teacher for four decades. She has danced in and choreographed off-Broadway, summer stock, movies, soap operas, and videos. Candace teaches at Princeton University, Mercer County Community College, the Peddie School, and has her own studio in Hightstown New Jersey.
Before falling in love with Ballroom Dancing and forming her company Dance Connection, she received a B.A. in Dance from SUNY Brockport. After moving to New York, she worked as a professional modern dancer with many choreographers performing and teaching in New York City, and touring across the U.S., Europe and Asia. Laurie also received an M.A. from Hunter College and has taught ESL to international students for over 20 years. She created the innovative Dance as a Second Language Course (DSL), merging the studies of English and Social Dancing at Baruch and LaGuardia Community Colleges. Now settled in Brooklyn, her passion for dance and teaching continues with her company Dance Connection offering group and private classes in Swing, Latin & Ballroom styles and specializing in Wedding Choreography.
Lisa Uribe has a background in competitive ballroom dance and performs across the Tri-State area. She is trained in International and American Smooth styles of Ballroom as well as social dances, including Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing and Balboa. Lisa teaches partner dance through Baylov Dance in New York City, combining a focus on solid technique with an emphasis on the joy of movement.
Slavi Baylov has over 30 years of ballroom dance experience including competing internationally in Open Professional Standard and is a U.S. Professional Rising Star Standard National Champion and Blackpool Open Standard Top 26. He teaches social as well as competitive Ballroom and Latin dances through Baylov Dance in New York City and judges ballroom dance competitions in addition to competing with his Pro/Am students across the country in International Standard and American Smooth.
