SAMPLE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Basics for Beginners
Meet your instructors. Is it your first time out on the dance floor, or do you simply need a refresher? Come early for a “quick start” and learn the steps that will carry you through the weekend. No experience needed!
Welcome Dance with the Avalon Jazz Band
The music of Avalon Jazz Band is inspired by the Parisian jazz scene of the 1930s and 40s, when emblematic sound was made popular by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. Avalon Jazz Band performs the American standards popular in France during that time period, offering their own vision of what contemporary swing can be, blending their francophone culture into their American experience.
Welcome Dance with Fleur Seule Swing Band
Fleur Seule is an authentic 1940s Jazz, Swing, & Ballroom band that play hits from all around the world. The elegant Allyson Briggs returns as band leader and lead vocalist to present waltzes, mambos, foxtrots, tangos, swing, and more! Fleur Seule will take you on a memorable musical journey as you glide across the floor of Mohonk’s own Parlor.
This class is a gentle introduction to two of the classic ballroom dances, the Foxtrot and the Waltz. The Foxtrot is one of the most versatile ballroom dances which can be adapted to a variety of musical styles. The Waltz originated as the original scandalous dance of the 16th Century in which the dancers actually held one another! Candace Woodward Clough will teach the basic steps as well as important leading and following techniques.
Continue to expand off your dance experience with this classic Foxtrot/Waltz class, taught by the talented Slavi Baylov and Lisa Uribe. You will learn important leading and following techniques that will enhance your skills. Some prior experience in Ballroom dancing needed.
Salsa and Cha-cha are a closely-related family of Latin dances from Cuba. Cha-Cha, and the precursor to Salsa, called Mambo, first became popular in the United States in the 1950s. Enjoy learning the basics of these spicy Latin dances with Gene Eagle.
Light up the dance floor with these two classic Latin Dance Forms. The cheeky Cha-Cha and sensual salsa bring the fire and passion to partner dancing. Intermediate dancers will enjoy learning some new turn combinations and styling possibilities in this rhythmic and lively class taught by Laurie Shayler and Dance Connection team.
Join Candace and learn the single 6-count East Coast Swing! This fun dance first appeared at the Savoy Ballroom in the late 1920s and it is still danced today to up-tempo Big Band or Rock and Roll music!
Intermediate Swing/Lindy Hop
Swing dancing is pure joy and a favorite among social dancers of all ages. Intermediate Dancers with knowledge of both 6 and 8 count rhythms will explore the classic swing out pattern, styling and more. Put some pep in your triple step and a smile on your face with Laurie and the Dance Connection team.
Enjoy the drama and romance that American Tango can bring to the dance floor! Come and learn to ignite the romantic Tango spark between you and your partner! This will be an intermediate/advanced class taught by Slavi and Lisa.
The Quickstep, with its roots in Ragtime, was developed in the 1920’s in New York from a combination of Foxtrot, Charleston, Peabody and the One-Step. It is an elegant and glamorous dance and body contact is maintained throughout the dance. Gene and Claire will lead this class for all levels.
Evening Dance with Soul City
Come and dance to the sounds of Soul City as they play Motown, R&B, Soul and Disco from the 1960’s to the 80’s! Enjoy hits by the Jackson Five, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and many more. All ages will have fun listening, dancing and singing along with two great female singers backed by a tight four piece band!
Margi and the Dapper Dots
What better way to recapture the bygone but not forgotten musical aura of the Great American Songbook and Old Hollywood than to listen and dance to Margi & the Dapper Dots! Inspired by the wonderful vocalists of the era, Margi Gianquinto will serenade you on the dance floor with selections from Gershwin and Berlin to Mancini and Jobim. A legendary era of great melodies, vocalists, and composers comes to life in one splendid evening.
Dancers can use this hour to practice steps they’ve learned and get ready for the Farewell Dance.
