Ballroom Dancing Weekend
November 30 – December 2, 2018
Bring a partner and twirl through a magical weekend, with dance classes, delicious cuisine and three fantastic dance events! On Friday night Mohonk presents the classic style and undeniable talent of Fleur Seule. Led by the dynamic Allyson Briggs, this band plays music from and inspired by the 1940’ and 50’ swing sound. Saturday evening features a favorite from Ballroom weekend, the 18 piece Big Blue Big Band, and on Sunday, Fleur Seule performs again for the farewell dance in the Parlor.
Mohonk Mountain House, decorated for the holidays in Victorian splendor, welcomes you to the elegance of a bygone era where you and your partner can dance the night (and days) away. Demonstrations and workshops are designed to teach students at all levels of experience. The instructors—Candace Woodward-Clough, Laurie Shayler, Jeni Breen, and Gene Eagle—are well-known dancers, performers, and teachers. Beginners never fear! Even if you’ve never danced before, this weekend is tailored to provide a perfect introduction to the waltz, foxtrot, swing, tango, and salsa. Intermediate and advanced students will refine their techniques and focus on new dance patterns throughout the weekend. So put on those dancing shoes and step out onto the dance floor for an unforgettable weekend of Ballroom Dancing!

Basics for Beginners
Meet your instructors. Is it your first time out on the dance floor, or do you simply need a refresher? Come early for a “quick start” and learn the steps that will carry you through the weekend. No experience needed!
Welcome Dance with Fleur Seule
Fleur Seule is an authentic 1940s Jazz, Swing, & Ballroom band that plays hits from all around the world. Gene Eagle introduced this dazzling new group to Mohonk and they will take you on a memorable musical journey as you glide across the floor of the Main Dining Room.
The welcome dance is open to all guests.
This class is a gentle introduction to two of the classic ballroom dances, the Foxtrot and the Waltz. The Foxtrot is one of the most versatile ballroom dances which can be adapted to a variety of musical styles. The Waltz originated as the original scandalous dance of the 16th Century in which the dancers actually held one another! Gene Eagle will teach the basic steps from both dances, as well as important leading and following techniques.
New patterns and advanced techniques of leading and following, taught by Candace, will enhance the skills of guests with some prior experience in ballroom dancing.
Enjoy learning the basics of these spicy Latin dances with Jeni Breen.
Dancers with a foundation in swing will enjoy learning some new combinations and styling possibilities in this lively swing class with Laurie.
Learn the basics of single-step swing dance with Candace.
Advanced Cha-Cha and Rhumba
Laurie will help experienced cha-cha and rhumba dancers polish their steps with advanced patterns and shine work.
Lead Follow Class
Have you ever watched a group of dancers and noticed that some couples appear to be working as a unit, whereas others seem to be bordering on wrestling? The difference is the magic of lead and follow! Intended for the intermediate and advanced dancer, this class will explore the secrets of effective non-verbal communication with your partner to make your dancing more coordinated and fun. Using steps from dances such as Waltz and Foxtrot, Gene will show you how using lead and follow techniques will help you to dance with greater style and ease.
Dancers with some experience can use this opportunity to refine what they know and pick up some new techniques along the way with Jeni.
Use this time to practice steps you’ve learned throughout the weekend. An instructor will be on hand to help you refine your technique.
Evening Dance with The Big Blue Big Band
Celebrate your individual style as you dance to music provided by The Big Blue Big Band, an elegant 17-piece orchestra.
Dancers can use this hour to practice steps they’ve learned and get ready for the Farewell Dance.
This is the last chance to show off your newfound style and say good-bye to old and new friends, while dancing to music by Fleur Seule.
