Basics for Beginners
Meet your instructors. Is it your first time out on the dance floor, or do you simply need a refresher? Come early for a “quick start” and learn the steps that will carry you through the weekend. No experience needed!
Welcome Dance with Fleur Seule’s Latin Big Band
Join Fleur Seule’s 13 piece Latin Big Band for a night of latin dancing! Fleur Seule is excited to return to kick off Mohonk’s annual Ballroom Weekend. With classic Salsa, Mambo, Cha Cha, Bachata, Bolero, and more, you won’t be able to sit still! What to expect: Hits made famous by Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, and more of the Fania Allstars.
Welcome Dance with After Five Jazz Combo
It’s time to get to the Lake Lounge for a fun filled night of dancing! This five piece band, directed by Jason Clinton, is an energetic group of talented musicians that perform throughout the Hudson Valley. Come listen to great Jazz, Swing and even some Rhythm and Blues.
The welcome dances are open to all guests.
This class is a gentle introduction to two of the classic ballroom dances, the Foxtrot and the Waltz. The Foxtrot is one of the most versatile ballroom dances which can be adapted to a variety of musical styles. The Waltz originated as the original scandalous dance of the 16th Century in which the dancers actually held one another! Gene Eagle will teach the basic steps from both dances, as well as important leading and following techniques.
New patterns and advanced techniques of leading and following, taught by Candace, will enhance the skills of guests with some prior experience in ballroom dancing.
Enjoy learning the basics of these spicy Latin dances with Jeni Breen.
Dancers with a foundation in swing will enjoy learning some new combinations and styling possibilities in this lively swing class with Laurie.
Learn the basics of single-step swing dance with Candace.
Advanced Cha-Cha and Salsa
Laurie will help experienced Cha-Cha and Salsa dancers polish their steps with advanced patterns and shine work.
Join Laurie and learn this famous Swing line dance. Test your memory and rhythmic skills with these solo jazz steps – the Shorty George, Boogie Back, Boogie Forward, Tackey Annie, and more. Shim Sham Shimmy!
Beginner/Intermediate Argentine Tango
Dancers with some experience can use this opportunity to refine what they know and pick up some new techniques along the way with Jeni.
December can become a bit frosty up on Mohonk mountain, so what better time to learn some dances from the Caribbean! Join Gene Eagle for this beginner class on two of the well-known dances from that area – the Rhumba and the Merengue. Originating in Cuba, the Rhumba is a romantic dance that was perfect for the sultry nights in Havana. With its slow, expressive rhythms and characteristic styling, the Rhumba will mentally whisk you away to that magical island. The lively and effervescent Merengue, which originated in the Dominican Republic, epitomizes a “party dance”, with a quicker tempo combined with a simple “step, step, step timing” and patterns in which the partners wrap in and unwind in each other’s arms.
Evening Dance with Fleur Seule Ballroom Big Band
Fleur Seule’s 13 piece band is back again Saturday night, with a mixture of classic ballroom hits. You will glide across the floor to Waltzes, Mambos, Foxtrots, Tangos, Swing, and more as you travel back in time to the 1940s. Come show off all the moves you have learned!
Evening Dance with Crazy Feet
Crazy Feet is hot swing dance band from Poughkeepsie, NY. The evening will be a mix of east coast swing, west coast swing, blues, Motown and good old rockin’ blues! Bring your dancing shoes and join in the fun!
Dancers can use this hour to practice steps they’ve learned and get ready for the Farewell Dance.
The Fleur Seule Jazz Quintet will be your Brunch sendoff host, as we say goodbye on Sunday morning. With a tight combo of 5 musicians, you will have one last chance to dance. Styles will cover a mixture of classic ballroom: Swing, Mambo, Cha Cha, Waltz, and much more. After the final practice session, join us on the dance floor for an elegant start to your morning.
