Artist's Inspiration Week

MOHONK MOUNTAIN HOUSE IS PROUD TO INTRODUCE A NEW VERSION OF THIS CLASSIC PROGRAM, SPANNING TWO EXCITING WEEKS OF LEARNING AND ART APPRECIATION IN OUR MAGICAL SETTING. In conjunction with Wired Gallery, we will feature a wide range of events including classes in pastel, drawing, watercolor, and painting; painting demonstrations; and two separate, all-day plein air events (painting directly from one's subject out-of-doors).
All levels of ability are welcome at all workshops.

As part of the Artist’s Inspiration program, works by participating artists will be on display and available for purchase in the Wired Gallery Group Show.

Wired Gallery was established in May 2012 with the mission to show works by mid-Hudson Valley artists. Located at 11 Mohonk Road in High Falls, New York, and open Saturdays and Sundays 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Wired Gallery was named “one of Ulster County’s most high-profile, prolific sources of quality art exhibitions” by Almanac Weekly. Mohonk Mountain House is a National Historic Landmark resort located just 90 miles north of New York City. Join Sevan Melikyan, owner of the Wired Gallery, and many of our artists for refreshments, discussions, and the selection of the sites where the artists will create their works the following day. Each artist will draw from a hat one of the 15 locations where they will pitch their easels. (Artists are allowed to exchange locations between themselves if they wish to.)


Tuesday, May 31

Plein Air Scavenger Hunt
Meet in the Lake Lounge to register for the plein air scavenger hunt. Pick up your map, learn the rules, and prepare to embark on your quest to visit the most artists painting around the Mohonk Grounds during the plein air paint out.

Plein Air Paint Out
The Plein Air Paint Out event will consist of more than two-dozen professional local artists scattered across the Mohonk property, creating plein air paintings for the enjoyment of our guests. Throughout the day you can explore the property with a map of all the artists’ locations. Spend as long as you want watching these talented painters capture the setting before them. For every artist you visit, you will be given a memento to collect. At the Collector’s Drawing later in the day, there will be a prize-drawing featuring one lucky winner among those who visited all of the stations.

Teatime and Plein Air Silent Auction
Join the artists and program leaders in the Lake Lounge for tea and cookies. Artworks created earlier in the day will be displayed on the Lake Porch where a silent auction will be held. Each painting will be labeled with the artist’s name, title, medium, and starting price. The silent auction closes at 5:30 p.m.

5:00 p.m. 
Collector’s Drawing
and Silent Auction Results

At the Collector’s Drawing event, a prize will be awarded to one person who collected mementos by visiting the most plein air sites. Silent Auction results will also be announced.

Film Showing: Lust for Life (1956)
A biographical film about the life of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Irving Stone and adapted by Norman Corwin. Directed by Vincente Minnelli and produced by John Houseman, the film stars Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh, James Donald as his brother Theo, and features Pamela Brown, Everett Sloane, and Anthony Quinn, who won an Oscar for his performance as Van Gogh's fast friend and rival Paul Gauguin. Running time: 122 minutes.

Learn about the fascinating history of plein air painting from Robert Carsten P.S.A. Plein air painting is painting directly from one's subject out-of-doors. Early American artists sought landscapes with dramatic beauty in areas like Mohonk, the Catskills and Adirondacks, and beyond, while their counterparts and predecessors in Europe explored forests, fields, and the outskirts of towns and cities.

Mohonk's summerhouses are perhaps the quintessence of the Mohonk experience; just sitting in one while contemplating the surrounding beauty is an unforgettable experience. Create your own lovely memory in the form of a pastel painting of one of these charming, rustic resting spots. Join Robert Carsten as he shares easy-to-follow instructions in composition and proportion.

Mitchell Saler Master Class:
Painting the Landscape
Capturing Atmosphere and the Environment
Join Painter Mitchell Saler as he demonstrates how to paint a realistic-style landscape in oil paint using a two foot by three foot canvas. Learn how to build up a painting starting with drawing an under-painting, then working from the background to the foreground to create a strong feeling of depth. He will discuss atmospheric perspective, composition, value, color theory, technique, and more.

Vine Van Gogh Paint and Sip Event
Join Vine Van Gogh, the Hudson Valley's premier “Sip and Paint” for a night of drinks, painting, fun, and relaxation. With the instruction of outstanding local artists, Vine Van Gogh helps you create your own masterpiece. John Varriano Masterclass:
Painting the Model Outdoors in Oil

This class will demonstrate the particular challenges and solutions to painting the portrait/figure in a landscape setting. Participants will be able to observe how the light in nature, whether full sun or overcast, will reveal tonal and color variety in flesh tones that markedly differ from what is seen in a controlled studio environment. The beautiful grounds of Mohonk Mountain House will provide a compelling and inspiring backdrop for our exploration.

Andrey Tamarchenko Master Class:
The Alchemy of Art

The "Alchemy of Art" invokes the forces of nature in order to bring us in direct contact with the corresponding elemental forces of our imagination. This workshop invites you to explore your own inner landscape: a sovereign territory unique to each individual, full of wonders, challenges, and potentiality. Alchemy of Art calls forth and honors images created in the psyche by directing the flow of energy from the deep interior out onto the paper. Splinters of heartache or hidden joy are given a chance to become expressed in visual language, transforming into works of unique power and beauty regardless of the skill level of the artist.

Lana Privitera Master Class:
Introduction to Watercolor Techniques:
Learning to Paint Birches the Fun Way

No previous experience with watercolors is needed for this fun, relaxing, little project with talented painting teacher Lana Privitera. We’ll experiment with variegated washes before getting wild with some multicolored splattering, dotting, and color lifting. Success is guaranteed!

Tom Sarrantonio Master Class:
Bamboo Brush and Ink

Participants will be introduced to some rudimentary ideas and techniques of Zen Brushwork (Zen Line, Zen Circle), and some traditional Chinese ink practice, including strokes used in painting bamboo as a subject. Some discussion of the history and philosophy of Asian brushwork will be incorporated. Emphasis will be on practice and process rather than product.

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. 
Lana Privitera Master Class: The Magic of Rocks and Waterfalls
Learn how to mix and overlap colors, and how to understand dark and light patterns as you create realistic rocks bathed by sunshine and water. You will learn to paint in negative to preserve the highlights and light-colored areas in your project. This is a very basic drawing class and a pattern will be available for quick tracing.

How-to-fix a “Blah” Watercolor
with Lana Privitera

Among other subjects, Mrs. Privitera will discuss and demonstrate how to fix or erase most common blunders in watercolors with some of her favorite tools: masking liquid, bristle brushes, and… Pointillism. She will also give you tips that will help you “see” full scales of values and color in real life, as well as in your photos or in your paintings.

The Power of Masking Tools in Watercolor
The Beach of your Dreams

Learn how to use masking techniques to create multi-layered washes full of color and definition. Lana Privitera will show you how to experiment with several watercolor masking methods, and work in increasingly darker layers, to create a beautiful rocky beach covered in colorful pebbles. Design the beach of your dreams.

Staats Fasoldt will explore with you using pencil and watercolor to interpret the stunning Mohonk landscape and interior spaces. Class participants will become familiar with the watercolor medium, its strengths, and its limitations.

An evening of Interactive Performance
with Jen Hix and Company

Come explore the rich history of arts in The Gilded Age through an interactive performance which includes music, poetry, dance, and of course, art! Performers will surround you with memory and imagination. You will be transported back in time to a dream-like state which connects the majesty of Mohonk Mountain House with the minds and spirit of the artists of that bygone era. You are welcome to join in and try your hand at drawing, or sit back and enjoy the show. Coffee and tea will be served, offering a wonderful way to round out your evening. Works created by professional artists during the performance will be raffled off at the end of the show.

PROGRAM LEADERS

Robert Carsten P.S.A., attended the Art Students League of New York, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Academia di Belle Arti in Italy. He is a board member, signature, and “master pastelist” member of the Pastel Society of America, editor of the PSA catalog and Pastelagram, and is a Masters’ Circle Pastelist in the International Association of Pastel Societies. A popular exhibitions juror, Robert juries exhibitions and instructs painting workshops nationwide and gave two demonstrations at the 2013 conference of the International Association of Pastel Societies in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Warren Hurley is a landscape painter living in Ulster County, New York. He has taught art to all age levels in public schools and arts organizations in New York and in Scotland where he was a Fulbright Fellowship recipient in 1979. Mr. Hurley exhibits throughout the Hudson Valley. His work is in collections here and in Scotland. He holds a BS in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz, and an MS in Art Education from New York University.

Mitchell Saler is a fine art painter who lives in Middletown, New York.  In 2009, he graduated with an Associate Degree in Visual Arts from Orange County Community College in Middletown, New York, where he presently works as a graphic artist and assistant for the Cultural Affairs department. In 2011, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing, summa cum laude, from SUNY New Paltz. He has received awards in various art exhibits, shows at a number of venues, and is involved in several art organizations.

Andrey Tamarchenko is the founder and artistic director of JoyArt Retreats in New Paltz, New York, Element 22 Studios in New Jersey, and Studio+ in Staten Island, New York. He has participated in 50+ solo and group shows in the U.S. and Europe. His paintings are in private art collections in the U.S., Italy, Spain, France, the U.K., Poland, Russia, Japan, and Australia.

John A. Varriano is a mid-Hudson Valley-based artist, and an award-winning and widely collected painter of portraits, the figure, landscapes, and still life. He currently teaches portrait painting and figure drawing at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, and is a regular workshop instructor at The Art Students League of New York. He also offers instruction at his Gardiner studio that he shares with his wife, the artist Marsha Massih. His work is represented locally by The Mark Gruber Gallery in New Paltz.

Lana Privitera, originally from Spain, graduated in 1983 from the Fine Arts School of Zaragoza, where she majored in Fashion Design and Art History. After working in advertising for a few years, she moved to the U.S. in the early 1990s.In the late '90s, her detailed and colorful watercolors of New Jersey farms and towns won her a following and some recognition locally. She became an elected member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society in 2002 and, in the following two years before she became a mother in 2004, her paintings were accepted in juried art shows at the state, national, and international level, winning awards in several of them. Mrs. Privitera is truly enjoying painting and teaching again from her new studio near Pine Bush New York, where she now resides. To learn more, visit www.watercolorsbylana.com.

Thomas Sarrantonio is Associate Professor of Art at SUNY College at New Paltz. He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where his teachers included Sidney Goodman and Will Barnet. His work has been exhibited widely, and he is the recipient of a number of awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and an Artist Residency Fellowship from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland. His studio is located in Rosendale, New York where he lives with his wife and children.

Staats Fasoldt has taught watercolor painting for 31 years at the Woodstock School of Art, and has exhibited his paintings throughout the world. He has an MFA in painting from SUNY New Paltz.
