Acclaimed among Hudson Valley gardens, our gardens date back to the time when Mohonk’s founder Albert K. Smiley nurtured his first plants on a rocky mountaintop. When the property surrounding the Mountain House was purchased in 1869, the rugged pitch pine and laurel reached to the doorstep of the original building.
The long history of the gardens’ creation began with a few struggling blossoms near the lake shore.
Mohonk’s upstate New York gardens were designed to fit into the picturesque or romantic style of landscape gardening: irregular in form, with variety and boldness of composition, and scenery of a more rugged nature.
Our gardens reflect the influence of the French and Italian, but mostly English styles of landscaping of the mid-19th century. Although growing things are never static, the landscape still possesses many of the characteristics familiar in that period. Albert Smiley’s design intent has been maintained as the gardens have matured and evolved.
In 1998, a Victorian maze was added next to the Rose Garden, providing old-fashioned entertainment for the gardens' visitors.
Mohonk Mountain House has received national recognition for the plantings and stewardship of the grounds, and in 1997, Mohonk's gardens were honored to receive the Grand Award for Grounds Maintenance from the Professional Grounds Management Association.
The Greenhouse at Mohonk Mountain House is a short walk from the Mountain House and a fascinating place for flora lovers to see how our award-winning gardens get their start. During the winter months, the Greenhouse is used to grow seedlings and potted plants for use in our summer gardens and in the Mountain House.
The Mohonk Greenhouse is open daily, year-round and offers guided greenhouse tours, providing the opportunity to talk with Mohonk horticulturists. Heirloom plants, plant baskets, garden accents, and indoor gardening supplies are available for sale year-round. Return home with a living piece of our mountaintop!
During the winter months, come visit our tropical paradise for a breath of warm air and lush greenery. Come see our horticultural team preparing for next season's gardens.
The Garden Shop at Mohonk Mountain House is located in the Greenhouse, offering garden statuary, an assortment of handmade baskets, candles, bird-feeders, chimes, botanical soaps, seed packets and a great selection of garden related gifts.
The Garden Shop is open seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
From its earliest days, the Mohonk experience has included creative floral displays placed throughout the Mountain House by our Mohonk florists. Our florists will be delighted to bring Mohonk’s natural splendor to your guest room or dinner table. A wide range of options are available, including roses, mixed seasonal arrangements, or custom designs to accommodate your needs.
