One of America’s oldest and largest barn structures in the northeastern United States is located at Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian castle resort in New Paltz, New York. The Mohonk Barn Museum is steeped in a rich and colorful history—one that has been preserved by generations and kept in pristine condition with antiques dating back to the 1800s.
The Barn Museum represents quintessential Americana – with horse-drawn buggies, a Victorian-era post office, a two-horse treadmill, a 1923 Fordson Tractor and more – all offering a glimpse of a typical day at Mohonk Mountain House. Of note, some of the equipment still works today and the Barn Museum curator, Jim Clark, provides demonstrations to visiting guests illustrating the use of classic blacksmithing and rustic carpentry techniques. In addition to the museum, the resort itself is a National Historic Landmark – so visitors will experience a cultural journey through history when they book a room reservation at the 266-room Victorian castle, located just 90 miles north of New York City.
The Barn Museum is open to day visitors (the day fee is $25 per person and includes access to 85 miles of hiking trails, museum, and grounds). Visitors of all ages and interests will find opportunities to immerse themselves in the unique history of this remarkable family-owned resort, founded in 1869.
